Good data quality is essential for every business as without it they can’t analyse, they can’t report and they can’t plan. But good data quality doesn’t just happen on it’s own. You have to work at it by ensuring that you have the right processes in place for collecting and storing the data.

This workshop will help you achieve your data quality by:

• Helping you understand what data quality actually is and its relevance to your business
• Explaining the concept of data value and how you can use it to sell the concept of quality
• Outlining examples of common data problems and their causes
• Giving you a comprehensive data quality framework that you can directly apply to your own business
• Examining each element of that data quality framework giving you practical examples of how to embed it in your current data management processes (or even set up new ones)
• Understanding the role of data governance in all of this
• Helping you prioritise your efforts

Delegates will take away practical, hands-on advice to help them achieve better data quality in their businesses.

In this digital world, it is becoming clear to many organisations that their success or failure depends on how well they manage data. They recognise that data is as a critical business asset which should be managed as carefully and actively as all other business assets such as people, finance, products etc. But like any other asset data does not improve itself and will decline in usefulness and value unless actively maintained and enhanced.

For any organisation a critical first step in maintaining and enhancing its data asset is to understand two critical things:

• How well does data support our current business model?
• How do we need to improve and develop it both to better sustain our current business and to enable our future business strategies and goals?

The primary purpose of a data strategy is to answer these two critical questions. For any data driven organisation a data strategy is essential because it serves as a blueprint for prioritising and guiding current and future data improvement activities. Without a data strategy, organisations will inevitably try to enhance their data assets in a piecemeal, disconnected, unfocused way, usually ending in disappointment or even failure. What’s needed is a well crafted and coherent data strategy which sets out a clear direction which all data stakeholders can buy into. And as the famous US baseball player Yogi Berra once said, “If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up somewhere else.”

This workshop will teach you how to produce a workable and achievable data strategy and supporting roadmap and plan, and how to ensure that it becomes a living and agile blueprint for change.

The Workshop

In this half day workshop Nigel Turner will outline how to create and implement a data strategy. This includes:

• How data strategy and business strategy interrelate
• What a data strategy is (and is not) and what it should contain
• Building & delivering a data strategy – the key components and steps
• Managing and implementing a data strategy to ensure it continually aligns with changing business priorities and needs

The workshop will take you through a simple and proven four step process to develop a data strategy. It will also include practical exercises to help participants apply the approach before doing it for real back in their own organisations, as well as highlighting some real world case studies where the approach has been successful.

This workshop will give delegates a crash course on “Telling your Data Story”. It’s not about naff practices in ‘data story telling’ and how to present data in interesting ways (nice pictures, pie charts are evil, etc.). This workshop is about how to talk ABOUT data in interesting ways that will get you engagement, understanding, and buy-in.

Topics that will be covered include:

• Understanding your audience (including the difference between internal presenting and public presenting)
• How to use effective tools for presenting and communicating, and how to use tools effectively (not always the same thing)
• Including: why PowerPoint isn’t entirely evil (but corporate branding standards usually are)
• Including: understanding narrative patterns in story for engagement
• Including: A planning tool based on the SECRET methods of an award winning novelist, screen writer, and reformed data modeller…
• Including: Delivering without Technology
• Understanding the importance of language and language barriers between countries, cultures, and stakeholders

We have all been there. Deep in a data “project”, miserable failure in our future and recriminations all around us. Whatever we try, failure is going to be a foregone conclusion. As data people, we must get back up, start again from the beginning and hope we don’t make the same mistakes again.

BUT what if we don’t know what mistake we may have made? What if the error was made by someone outside of our control? What if there wasn’t an error, but just the normal organisational challenges? Maybe something outside of our organisation – a vendor or other party caused the failure.

This interactive session will concentrate on 4 or 5 of the usual big-ticket items we all fail at, being interactive with the attendees and providing tools and techniques to take away. Join Sue as she dives deep into some of the most well-known disasters, works with you all to determine what caused these failures and provide tools and techniques to chase away the spectre of another failure. Bring your own stories along to share with the group. Whether the story is simple or complex, there is always a way to turn the failure around and get that successful outcome you really wanted.

Immerse yourself in the world of Data Visualization during our engaging workshop, where theory meets practice. Participants will not only grasp the foundational principles of intuitive design but also apply them to a real-world case. Through hands-on exercises and interactive discussions, delegates will dissect actual charts, uncovering insights and crafting compelling visual narratives. Explore the pitfalls of comparing “apples to oranges” and master techniques to accurately represent data through critical thinking. Dive into visualizing trends and sidestep clutter with strategies to avoid chart junk. Participants will gain insights into which charts to avoid and how to leverage sketching for rapid ideation. Join us to elevate your data storytelling prowess and captivate your audience with amazing visualizations.

Key Learnings:
• Importance of intuitive design for comprehension
• Techniques to highlight meaningful patterns in data
• Strategies to avoid misleading comparisons and clutter in visualizations
• Insight into effective chart selection and leveraging sketching for ideation.

The rapid pace of development of Artificial Intelligence and related technologies holds potential promise for organisations looking to tap their data assets more effectively and efficiently. However, the adoption of new technologies may in fact herald the calling in of technical and data debt in organisations as the promised potential builds on the foundations of data capabilities already in the organisation.

In this master class, Daragh O Brien, co-author of “Data Ethics” and featured TDAN.com columnist, walks delegates through a structured approach to defining a roadmap for sustainable data improvement to support responsible AI implementation, developed from Castlebridge's own experience in R&D of AI solutions internally and with clients. The session will also look at where "AI" can assist in the ‘heavy lifting’ of data and technical debt and the critical role of data governance in ensuring appropriate standards are in place, complied with, and understood to ensure compliance with EU AI Act and Data Protection laws, and ensure quality outcomes for stakeholders.

If we believe that AI can improve decision-making in emergency response, shouldn’t we first understand how humans make decisions to begin with?

Since the time that the use of data in emergency response scenarios has become mainstream, it has been advertised as the tool to improve decision-making. It didn’t take long to realize that the growth of information available was causing problems by itself. Now AI is looked at as a solution to this information overflow problem.

The data is there to support emergency responders to gain situational awareness in turn to make better decisions, but what is situational awareness, how is it developed in the human brain, and what are the barriers to gaining good situational awareness? The neurological process of perceiving, understanding, and predicting what will happen in any given situation is what develops situational awareness. This process is supported by the mental models gained during training which help in gaining situational awareness.

There is a huge gap between the technological aspects of using AI, and the human factors that come into play when emergency responders need to operate in high-risk, high-consequence time-compressed environments.

This presentation will cover the challenges that lie ahead when we truly want to support emergency responders with AI to improve decision-making. Along the way, we will talk about a couple of elephants in the room.

Data Quality approaches tend to focus on technical aspects as a key success factor, with monitoring, dashboards, automation and 'shift left' mindset at the forefront of conversations. It's important to remember that Data Quality sits at the intersection between technical functionality, business processes and people, and requires an interdisciplinary approach to ensure successful outcomes.

This talk will focus on practical experiences of implementing technical solutions, supplemented by data literacy, change management and communication strategies. It will delve into relevant case studies, success stories and lessons learned to realise a sustainable approach.

Key Takeaways:
• Data culture is a key factor of successful data quality initiatives (shift right before shifting left)
• The importance of quantitative and qualitative data quality measurements
• Lesson learned from cultural and organisational change management to realise data quality improvements
• How to define unified success metrics (striving for 'good enough data' over 'perfect data')

AI is driving massive changes across industries and will eradicate many jobs. What about Business Intelligence (BI)? Which data skills will remain relevant in the new reality, and how will BI jobs be redesigned?

AI is excellent at answering questions, but so far, humans are the ones asking them. The central question of BI is whether the data meets the business need, which decomposes into:

• What is the business goal, and how can it be served?
• Is the data correct and relevant?
• Is the final product bringing the impact needed?

BI roles redesigned around this central question will continue to be successful and drive tangible business impact.

This session will explore the аctivities and skills needed and how to leverage them in an AI-driven future.

This session will convey how organisations can progress through the AI journey, from initial awareness of the possible, to identifying use cases, convert into hypotheses and rapidly prototype those. The speakers will showcase how their facilitated AI hackathons engage stakeholders to create hypotheses and evaluate solution feasibility with a fail-fast approach, to efficiently select viable candidates for production. The speakers will walk through a detailed case study of a recent defence hackathon that generated promising proof-of-concepts for how AI could enhance robot dogs to help protect lives in military operations.

Most organisations have a strategy stating business goals over a longer time frame than an annual plan – anything from 3 to 40 years. It sets vision and direction, and there may be functional strategies. People, process, technology and, in enlightened organisations, data are seen to be key assets, you could say the DNA. Each of these warrant their own strategy but what should be in a data strategy, and how should it be deployed? The publication of data strategies seems to be increasing, yet the quality, breadth and ease to execute vary dramatically. This workshop will explore the key components of a data strategy, how topics interlink and, importantly, its deployment – from the framework through to the execution. This workshop will be interactive, please bring examples and be prepared to discuss during the workshop. The goal is to enable you to develop a data strategy that works for your organisation. Key points: • Understand the purpose of a data strategy • Agree the framework of a data strategy that works for you • Determine how to execute the strategy, making it accessible and useful for all.

To be able to engage in this workshop, you will need access to the case study material on the day by using the links below however, there will be printed documentation available in the session.
