Business Analysts are often immersed in the demands of individual projects, solving immediate challenges and delivering successful outcomes. But what happens when the same problems continue to appear across multiple initiatives?

In this speaker interview, Josie Stone, Strategic Change Portfolio Manager (Analysis & Planning) at ARAG Legal Services UK, explains why Business Analysts should look beyond project delivery to identify recurring organisational patterns, connect operational challenges with strategic priorities, and increase their influence across the organisation. She also shares the thinking behind her Elevate Framework and discusses how Business Analysts can become stronger voices in strategic decision-making.

Throughout my career, I have seen examples of BAs delivering “successful” projects that seem to lack the expected impact. Not only is this disheartening for the project team, it also gradually erodes the confidence of business leaders in the BA discipline.

On reflection, I realised we don’t always take advantage of our unique position in the organisation – we spend most of our time “looking down”, focused on plastering over symptoms rather than making connections. This session is about helping BAs spot the patterns that run through projects and surface them to drive real, lasting change.

I think this falls into three pots:

  • Success is often measured based on deliverables rather than true business outcomes.
  • Foundational issues cross functional boundaries, and no one feels accountable.
  • The root cause implied by the pattern is often complex and onerous to solve.

If multiple teams are solving “the same problem” in different ways—and investing heavily to do it—that’s a strong signal you’re looking at something bigger than a single project.

Amid the noise of multiple projects, it provides simple lenses drawn from strategy and systems thinking that enable BAs to “look up” and see what’s really going on. That’s where the real value is. It’s not about individual requirements. It’s about the patterns they reveal (duplication, misalignment, missed opportunities) and how you use those patterns to challenge priorities, influence decisions, and get noticed.

Because that’s where influence sits, leaders aren’t just interested in what’s broken – they care about what it means for investment, risk, and outcomes. When BAs make that link, they move from delivery support to strategic partner.

Start reframing what you see. Don’t just describe the issue – highlight the pattern, the impact, and the trade-offs. You don’t need permission to think strategically. You just need to be confident in connecting the dots and speaking up.

Confidence to step beyond the project, to challenge what doesn’t feel right, and to use insight to shape decisions – not just document them. Because that’s how great BAs get noticed.

The most valuable Business Analysts don’t just solve today’s problems. They identify the patterns that shape tomorrow’s decisions.
