Business Analysis for Good: My Experience with a Women’s Collective in Cambodia
by Helen Godfrey, Business Analyst Manager, LSEG – London Stock Exchange Group
In March 2025, I had the privilege of volunteering with *People and Places*, a remarkable charity dedicated to ethical volunteering. My journey took me to Siem Reap, Cambodia, where I supported a vibrant women’s sewing collective led by the inspirational Salin Rin, CEO of Treak Creations.
Treak Creations is more than just a clothing business. Nestled in the village of Treak—just 2km outside Siem Reap, the historic gateway to Angkor Wat—it employs local women to design and produce garments for the local, expat, and tourist markets. Every stitch sewn supports not only the artisans themselves but also the wider community. All profits from the collective are reinvested directly into the local school in Treak.
Education in Cambodia faces many hurdles. Due to a nationwide teacher shortage, most children attend school for only half the day. The Treak school offers an additional half-day of English instruction, giving students vital language skills that open doors to better job opportunities in Siem Reap’s growing economy. This extra education also allows parents to work full days, improving their families’ stability and income.
With average salaries in Cambodia ranging from just $250 to $300 a month, English proficiency can be a life-changing asset—one that empowers the next generation to rise beyond the poverty cycle.
During my time there, I reflected on how the principles of business analysis can transcend borders. Whether it’s streamlining operations in a global firm or enhancing impact in a local nonprofit, the tools of our trade are surprisingly universal. My experience showed me firsthand how thoughtful analysis, cultural empathy, and community-driven solutions can amplify social change—no matter where in the world you are.
