In this issue we feature the following articles:

1. Cloud Computing: Rethinking Control of IT by Jason Bloomberg

It’s simply amazing how many executives, both in IT and in the lines of business, still favour Private Clouds over Public. These managers are perfectly happy to pour money into newfangled data centers (sorry, “Private Clouds”), even though Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its brethren are reinventing the entire world of IT. Their reason? Sometimes they believe Private Clouds will save them money over the Public Cloud option.... What gives? The true reason for this stubbornness, of course, is the battle over control. Download this article.

Jason will be presenting his seminar on Enterprise Cloud Computing

5-6 December 2013, London.

2. Everything They Ever Wanted to Know About YOU by Michael A. Schiff

The recent revelations about the NSA’s data collection highlight

privacy issues, which enterprises also face as they build a more

complete view of their customers. Visit a website, make a Facebook entry, contact a call center, tweet a message, or use a loyalty card to receive

a discount and chances are your information is being tracked, collected, and consolidated so companies can, in their own words, “serve you better.” In the past, this may have been a somewhat arduous and much less

extensive process, but technology and economics have made what was once almost impossible an everyday (every click?) and much more comprehensive reality. Download this article.

3. The Zachman Framework vis a vis Other Frameworks (Enterprise Architecture: Exploring a Chemistry Metaphor) by John Zachman

Many times, I am asked, “what is the difference between the Zachman Framework and other Frameworks, notably TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework)? There is a profound difference and Allen Brown, President of The Open Group, expressed this in introducing me to a TOGAF conference in Johannesburg several years ago when he said something to the effect, “for years, I thought it was either TOGAF OR Zachman. That is incorrect. It is TOGAF AND Zachman.” This article is my effort to elaborate Allen’s observation using a “Chemistry Metaphor”. Download this article.

John and Sunil Dutt Jha will be running the Zachman Enterprise Architecture: Modelling Workshop in London, 30 Sept - 3 Oct 2013

4. Been There, Forked ThatWhat the Unix-Linux schism can teach us about Hadoop’s future.

Concerned about proprietary and expensive forks of Hadoop, T-Systems’ Juergen Urbanski explains how to tell if you are buying an open version of Hadoop or something you might later regret. Download the article here.

Juergen Urbanski is speaking at the Enterprise Data and BI Conference Europe 2013 taking place in London, 4-6 November 2013
